2026-08 Interview
Q1. What is the theme of your current work?
I give a physical body to what has been named — to language — and then strip it away. Through that process, I touch the world that precedes naming. Put simply: I write characters, and then make them unreadable.
Q2. In earlier interviews, you spoke about "repetition" — you once said you faced it with a sense of pessimism, rooted in the practice of writing the same character hundreds of times. How has your perspective on repetition changed?
There are two kinds of repetition: repetition with the will to change reality, and repetition without it.
When tradition and innovation are contrasted, people often frame it as repeating or not repeating — but that is wrong.
To say repetition is old and non-repetition is new is shallow.
It was the second kind of repetition where I felt a deadlock, and from there I began building a new path.
I no longer take a position for or against repetition as a whole.
Q3. Lately you often use the word "body." What does it mean to you?
A body is what is needed to exist in this world. To become a member of this world, you need a body.
Lately I have come to think that language and logic themselves cannot be said to be in this world.
Q4. In your work, you cover what you have written with frosted acrylic, or burn it — making it unreadable. Is there no resistance in undoing what you wrote?
No resistance. It is true that I wrote it with effort.
But giving a physical body to borrowed language — language I did not create — then claiming it as my own work,
and someone seeing it or owning it: I don't sense anything changing much in that cycle.
Q5. You have been exhibiting abroad. What happened there?
First, I began to grasp what carries and what doesn't when I take my work outside Japan.
Every reaction is good feedback for me.
And recently: seen from Japan, Europe looks far to the "West" and Japan far to the "East," and we imagine a divide in values between them. But that isn't so.
There are people in the West with Eastern values, and the reverse.
What is there is not a difference of place but of individuals.
It is always "I" and "you" — nothing else.
Q6. How do you want people to experience your work?
Showing — seeing — being seen. I want to create an experience where the space between them dissolves, or spills over.
Q7. What challenges do you want to take on next?
I spent the past month in Switzerland.
Looking back on what I have done so far, my vision ahead became clearer.
First, I want to talk with people more.
I now know clearly who I want to talk with, and about what.
Through that, the next challenge should begin on its own.
Q8. Do you think your approach will continue to change?
Yes, it will keep changing.
My approach was not decided by anyone else; it moves with my own changes.
As long as I don't stop making my art, it will keep changing.
